Quotes on your iPhone Lock Screen: the wallpaper way, and how to make it rotate
Why Lock Screen widgets are the wrong shape for a sentence, how to export a quote as a wallpaper in Kandou, and how iOS Photo Shuffle rotates a set of them.
The short answer. The best way to put a quote on your iPhone Lock Screen is as a wallpaper, not a widget: Lock Screen widgets are about half the screen wide and cut a sentence to a few words. Kandou exports any quote as a full-screen wallpaper image for free; you save it to Photos and set it as your Lock Screen. To rotate several quotes, save a few wallpapers and use the iOS Photo Shuffle option when customizing the Lock Screen. Kandou does not ship a Lock Screen widget, on purpose.
Why a Lock Screen widget is the wrong shape for a quote
People search for “Lock Screen quotes widget” because the Lock Screen is the screen you see most, and that instinct is right. The widget is the wrong tool. iOS Lock Screen widgets come in a fixed small rectangle roughly half the width of the screen, meant for a temperature or a step count. Squeeze a sentence into it and you get four words and an ellipsis.
A wallpaper is the whole screen. The quote can breathe, the typography can be beautiful, and the clock sits above it like a title. That is why Kandou exports quotes as wallpapers instead of shipping a widget that would truncate them. (A Lock Screen widget was prototyped and removed for exactly that reason.)
Putting a quote on the Lock Screen
In Kandou
- Open the quote. On the Home tab, tap Share; or in Browse, press and hold the quote and choose Share as Image.
- Choose the Wallpaper size. The sheet offers Pin, Story, and Wallpaper; Wallpaper is a full-screen image at your iPhone’s exact aspect ratio, rendered at four times resolution so it stays crisp.
- Pick the look. Minimal (free) uses Kandou’s beige-and-charcoal palette with a Light or Dark variant. Choose a serif, sans, or rounded font and a text size. Pro adds Photo (the quote over your own picture, pinch to frame it, text at the top, middle, or bottom) and Bold (your own background and text colors).
- Save to Photos. The wallpaper size replaces the share button with Save to Photos, which needs add-only access to your library.
- Set it as the Lock Screen from Photos: open the saved image, tap Share, then Use as Wallpaper, and add it. iOS has no way for an app to set your wallpaper directly, so this last step is always yours.
Rotating quotes on the Lock Screen with Photo Shuffle
You cannot have a rotating quote widget on the Lock Screen, but you can have rotating quote wallpapers, and iOS does the rotating:
- Save four or five quote wallpapers from Kandou to Photos.
- Press and hold the Lock Screen, tap the plus button to add a new wallpaper, and choose Photo Shuffle.
- Choose Select Photos Manually and pick your Kandou wallpapers.
- Set the shuffle frequency: On Tap, On Lock, Hourly, or Daily.
Daily is the setting that matches Kandou’s own rotation: one line per day, long enough to land. When you save a new wallpaper, add it to the shuffle from the same customization screen.
Making a Lock Screen wallpaper readable
- Short quotes win. A two-line quote reads in a glance under the clock; a paragraph does not. Kandou’s text size options help, but choose the line first.
- Mind the clock and the widgets. The top third of the Lock Screen holds the time. In the Photo style (Pro), place the text at the middle or bottom.
- Dark on light, or light on dark. The Minimal style’s Light and Dark variants both keep contrast high. With a photo background, pick calm images.
- Match the Home Screen. iOS can pair a Lock Screen with a Home Screen wallpaper; a plain Home Screen keeps the quote from competing with app icons.
The Home Screen is a different job
The Lock Screen is for one line you chose to live with for a while.
