A daily quote app that shows your quotes, on your schedule, with no feed
What "daily quote" should mean (one chosen line, not an endless feed), how Kandou's rotation modes work, and how to pick a pace that lets a quote land.
The short answer. A daily quote app should give you one line you chose, at a time you chose, and then leave you alone. Kandou does that on iPhone: it rotates your saved quotes (and any library collections you add) daily, every other day, weekly, or at up to four custom times a day, on the Home tab and on a Home Screen widget. There is no feed, no AI-generated content, no ads, and no account. It is free; Pro is a one-time $4.99 USD purchase. Kandou does not send notifications, so the widget and the Home tab are how the quote reaches you.
The problem with most daily quote apps
Open the App Store’s biggest quote apps and you get a feed: hundreds of thousands of generic motivational lines, a new one every time you swipe, a subscription to unlock the categories, and often ads. The daily quote becomes a slot machine. You read fifty lines and remember none of them, because none of them were chosen and none of them stayed long enough to matter.
The original idea was better. A quote a day, one you can carry around all day, from a collection with some intention behind it. That takes a slower app.
What Kandou does instead
- Your collection, not a feed. The rotation runs over the quotes you saved, plus whichever curated collections you added from the library. Nothing you did not choose shows up.
- A pace you set. Standard mode rotates daily, every other day, or weekly at a time of day you pick. Personalized mode rotates at up to four custom times a day, for a morning line and an evening line.
- Two surfaces, two schedules. The Home tab and the Home Screen widget each have their own rotation setting, so the widget can change daily while the app changes weekly, or the other way round.
- A filter for the moment. The Home tab’s category grid narrows the rotation to one category: Stoic on a hard morning, Love on a good one.
- No feed, no AI, no ads, no account. The app shows a quote and gets out of the way.
Setting a daily quote
In Kandou
- Put something in the rotation. The free 25-quote Starter collection is already there; add your own lines with the plus button, or open the Library tab and add a collection (Stoic Wisdom, Motivation, and Love come with Pro).
- Open Settings and choose Home. Set the mode to Standard, the interval to Daily, and the time to when you actually look at your phone: 7:00 a.m. for a morning line, 9:00 p.m. for something to end the day on.
- Do the same for Widget, then add the small widget (free) or the medium widget (Pro) to your Home Screen.
- Filter when you need to. On the Home tab, tap a category in the grid to restrict the current rotation to that category; tap it again to clear.
- Change the quote by hand any time: the rotation moves to the next quote on schedule, and editing your collection does not shuffle the current one out from under you.
Choosing a pace
- Daily is the default for a reason. One line, one day, enough repetitions to remember it.
- Weekly suits a small, weighty collection: ten lines you want to live with rather than glance at.
- Personalized (up to four times a day) works for people who use quotes as prompts, a morning intention and an evening reflection. More than two changes a day usually turns the quote back into noise.
- Off shows one quote until you change it. Use it when a single line is doing real work for you this month.
Where the daily quotes come from
Kandou’s library is small and chosen on purpose: 125 public-domain quotes in total, from pre-1930 editions and translations. The free Starter collection has 25; Pro adds Stoic Wisdom (40, from Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus), Motivation (30, from Emerson, Thoreau, James Allen, and William James), and Love (30, from Browning, Dickinson, and Shakespeare). Each quote carries its author, and the whole library is in English for now.
That is not thousands of quotes, and it is not meant to be. The point of the library is to get the rotation going on day one while you add the lines that are actually yours.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best daily quote app without a subscription?
Kandou is free on iPhone with no subscription, no ads, and no account; Pro is a one-time $4.99 USD purchase. It rotates your own quotes and a curated library on the schedule you set, rather than serving a feed.
Can I get a quote of the day on my iPhone Home Screen?
Yes. Add the Kandou widget to your Home Screen and set the widget rotation to Daily. The small widget is free; the medium widget, with the author and category, comes with Pro.
Does Kandou send a daily quote notification?
No. Kandou does not send notifications. The daily quote appears on the Home tab and on the Home Screen widget at the time you set.
Can I choose which quotes are in the daily rotation?
Yes. The rotation includes only the quotes you saved and the library collections you added. Filter the Home tab by category to narrow it further.
Does the daily quote change at the same time every day?
The Home tab changes at the time you set. The widget follows the same schedule, refreshed by iOS, so it can lag the set time by a few minutes.
